hughey michael van daan. 15. depression, anxiety disorder. michelle and franco van daan, hughey's parents, have always been eccentrics. michelle wore a vibrant lime green dress to their wedding and shaved her head while she was pregnant to hughey because she wanted to show off her ear piercings. franco, an astronomer/author, painted real life galaxies on hughey's ceiling and added a christmas light onto each individual star so that they would glow in the night. there isn't a plain anything in their house or on their six acre iowa farm, except for maybe the corn. and hughey.
hughey never really understood how to take things in. since the day he came home from the hospital, all kinds of things had been thrown right at him. the first thing his parents did was blow giant bubbles in his face and that scarred baby hughey for life. he's still extremely frightened of bubbles, as well as a lot of things. while hughey was in first grade, on halloween, his parents had him watch children of the corn. as a prank, his mother took him on a walk through their cornfields and had his father run through the corn like "he who walks behind the rows". hughey still won't go back into the corn.
he'd always been a quiet, submissive boy. in school, other boys picked on him for being so gangley and awkward and not talking to the girls. or, not really talking to them. hughey has kind of been a loner his entire life, except for once.
in freshman year, a girl really spoke to him for the first time. her name was octavia finch and she hung out with the boys that had been picking on hughey since kindergarten. at first, hughey had been a bit skeptical about the thought of actually having someone around, but after awhile he came to like her. she was his first crush and all he thought about for a month straight. they became quite close and one day, after school, octavia had hughey walk her home. it was a pretty awkward walk, all octavia did was giggle and hughey kept tripping over pebbles in the dirt. she lived about a mile from him, on the next farm over. hughey started to walk home after they said their goodbyes, but she called him back and kissed him. it was his first kiss, and his only kiss.
that night, octavia called him and told him that he could walk her home again, but he should wait by the old gas station across the street from the school. and so he did, but octavia wasn't there. her friends were. chris reynolds and fincher winchester were there, and it turned out the whole thing had just been a prank. they really beat him up. hughey came home in tears, with two black eyes and covered in scrapes and bruises. they called him names he'd never even heard of before and threatened to have their older brothers fuck him up even more if he ever spoke to octavia again.
hughey never told his mom who beat him up, but pretty much everyone knew. he got quieter and more nervous and there were some days that he didn't even leave his room. he was always crying and whenever his parents had him leave the house, he'd start hyperventilating and crying more because he was afraid that chris and fincher were going to be there to hurt him again. he stopped eating and pretty much speaking to anyone in general. he cut himself off from the world. his parents couldn't really get him to leave his bedroom after may eleventh, and that's when they decided that he needed help. they'd gotten him a therapist and all, but he wouldn't go to the appointments. they sent him to hawthorne, hoping that maybe their son could be a little bit happy again.
